Save Me - Chapter 6

Save Me - Chapter 6

We stepped into the morning sun.

As we crossed the yard, we passed the fire pit we’d had the previous night.

James dragged his shoe through the muck. What happened here, Miley? Was someone else here?

“Yeah, but I took care of it.”

“What do you mean, you took care of it? What did you see?”

The tone of James’ voice made me pause before I responded, “Just a man, a creepy, scruffy man who kept calling me kitten. I scared him off with a letter opener.”

James inspected the ground around the fire, the footprints were nearly washed away but my ballet slipper was clearly responsible for several of the small dips, but James focussed on ones that looked like hoof prints.

“Did you see any animals here?”

“|No.”

I can’t see the tracks from a man, I only see these,” he said sitting back thoughtful.

“The man, did you look at his feet?”

“No. Why?”

“This man would not have been scared off by a fuckin’ letter opener, Miley.”

A chill ran through my body.

“Then what was he?”

“Probably a saytre or…”

“Like the half man, half goat?” I mocked.

James stared up at me with piercing eyes. “We need to get moving. Something else must have spooked him, you’re lucky. You don’t want to know anything more about saytres than you already know.”

I didn’t argue with that. “Are all these mythical creatures bad news?”

James nodded with a frown as he rifled through his pockets for a lighter.

“Where are we going to go, James?”

“I don’t know, I never thought about it this far ahead.”

It was eerily deserted as we travelled. There were hardly birds in the trees, never mind another person or mythical being around.

“I’ll keep watch while you sleep.”

“What about you?”

“You can take the next watch.”

I agreed with a nod, but it seemed like the rest was more for my sake than his.

As I drifted off to sleep was awoken again by another strange visitor.

“I’m not going back, Michael.”

“We knew you’d say that, but you are always welcome, James, forgiveness has always been part of our work. You have done nothing that can’t be forgiven, you have only to forgive yourself.”

“I’m not that angel any more. To do what you do, what we were brought forth to do, it requires a certain amount of… innocence.”

“This too, we knew you’d say, but we thought that perhaps some of the guilt would lift from your heart by the invitation. You would be welcome.”

“I wouldn’t fit in there, I’d be too… jaded. You know why I did it, you had to have seen some of what I was doing when I was meeting with her.  I couldn’t become mortal. Fuck! She would have rejected me if I was only mortal.”

“She rejected you anyways.”

I cracked an eyelid open to see the blindingly beautiful angel standing in front of James. Both of their wings were formidable but James didn’t glow in the same way Michael did.

James nodded, “I was blinded by my love for her.”

The two were silent as I lay there closing my eyes again.

“Do you miss it?”

“Yes, sometimes.”

“Why didn’t you fall? Why did you choose to do things the way you did instead of asking? We’re permitted to fall, there might have been some exception made for your special request.”

“I couldn’t risk it. I half expected to be hunted down, to be forced to make the choice, but you all just left me there.”

“You were not alone, James, but we could do nothing. We don’t watch over each other in the same way we do the humans, we had no way to find you if you didn’t ask. And you didn’t ask James. Your soul was lost to us except for the moments we saw you as we passed at the shoulders of our mortals. We didn’t see you for a century.”

“I couldn’t risk it. And I know all the bullshit, no help without request, seems a little convenient doesn’t it?”

“Yes, we mourned your loss.”

“Michael, why didn’t you come after me. Why was it permitted? It would have been easy to order you to find me, for our Creator to make it possible to find me.”

“I think it’s part of the plan.”

“You don’t know?”

“We are not all-knowing. We know only what we are meant to, this you know. Perhaps you were allowed to walk the earth without falling because your intentions were not for Lucifer. Perhaps there is a purpose to having an angel on Earth. You are the only one.”

“Except for the wings, I’m not much of a fuckin’ angel anymore.

“True, you have the limitations of Earth, but you are still an angel James, it was never taken from you. We don’t have the ability to read your thoughts like the mortals but I sense from her that you’ve been protecting her. But we sense that she is only a tiny percent human, which might explain why there was no one assigned to her at birth. She is not human.”

“Fuck! I knew it. You left an innocent to drown and die, she’s human enough to need a protector. Look at her. Ha! I guess she really could do worse than me. She could be dead like all the others!

“Were the screams of terror and agony too subtle for any of you to step in? Where the building sliding into streets or into the water too much chaos for the choirs of angels to handle? What’s next? Is there anyone left on Earth to protect at all or are you all on vacation now?” James spat in Michaels general direction.

“We did what we could and we don’t know what is to come, we can only trust.”

The rims of Michael’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. “The Rapture was not something we looked forward to! We could only help the faithful, the ones who couldn’t handle living in the new world with the curtain fallen, there are a few who chose to stay.

“She is thinking that perhaps you are her father, she is asking me. Though I can only hear the strongest of her thoughts… she will not let that question go unanswered.”

I clamped my hands over my mouth with a squeak.

“He knew you were awake, he just chose not to tell me.” James growled.

James pulled out another cigarette and waved me over with a resigned sigh.

“Can you really read my thoughts?” I whispered to the angel as I scrambled up wiping the sleep from my eye. The Angel Michael extended a hand to welcome me forward. He radiated a warm light that seemed to draw me into his open embrace.

“Yes, precious one.”

“Stop that, Michael,” snapped James, placing an arm between me and the angel.

I looked at James, puzzled, but he just shook his head, “I just don’t want your judgement to be clouded. All that light makes you a little light headed… I guess. Save the hugs for another time,” he fumbled awkwardly.

“Is James really my father?” I asked settling next to James instead, the expanse of his wing behind us.

“I am not permitted to say at this time.”

“They are barrels of useful information, but usually make us figure it out for ourselves Miley,” puffed James sarcastically. “He probably doesn’t know he waits for answers from above instead of using his own brain. If you were three quarters human and that man you called father, was indeed your father and a human, Michael would have no problem hearing your thoughts.”

“So that means, either you’re my father or my father wasn’t really human.”

“See that Michael? She’s fuckin’ smarter than you and she’s only fuckin’ sixteen!”

“She’ll need more than brains to survive out here.”

“Yeah, she’s got me.”

“I could take her with me now, if she is willing.”

“What?” I asked, once again confused. “I thought you had to die to go to heaven.”

“Fuck that!”

“James? What is he saying, I can go with him, like this?”

“Yes, precious one, you could rejoin all of humanity in heaven.”

“Is it beautiful?” I asked reaching out for the angels outstretched hand.

“Stop it, Michael! She’s not going anywhere.”

Michael smiled at me but dropped his hand and returned James’ stare. “Very well, she should make an informed decision. I will return in thirty days, sooner if she calls for me. You just have to lift your voice and your mind and call upon the Angel Michael. I will return for you, precious one.”

“Fuck off!” Spat James again.

The angel frowned in a way that looked very unnatural on his lovely face.

“We are here to help, never to harm.”

“Yeah, and you’re here to let a teenage girl die because you think she might be happier in heaven? You can’t have her.”

“Blessings to you, brother. You are welcome to come too.”

“And to you,” replied James graciously followed by another, “now, fuck off!”

Michael gave me a wink and a wave of love washed over me as he disappeared in a flash of white light.

“Don’t be fooled, angels are full of that lovey-dovey shit. Sometimes they forget that we were created as warriors first.”

“Warriors?”

He nodded, “Yeah, to protect God from the terrible things he created.”

Something about the way James squashed his cigarette with the toe of his shoe sent shivers down my spine. I didn’t what to know what might be out there, and I didn’t ask.

Save Me - Chapter 5

Save Me - Chapter 5

I spent a fretful day perched uncomfortably on that bale of hay.

James moaned and groaned pitifully.

I sat beside him and cried.

In between bouts of pain, he turned to me. “Miley?”

“Yeah? Do you need another drink of water?”

James nodded his head before his face contorted into another painful grimace.

I held the bottle for him and some of the water dribbled down his chin.

“I can’t fight it anymore…”

“James…” I reached out to touch his face.

“James! Don’t give up.” I begged.

“That man might come back, you can’t leave me alone here. You can’t die now, not after everything that has happened.”

James curled in yet another spasm. “Gaaaa!”

I watched helplessly as tears streamed down my cheeks.

“You’re not bad, I know you’re not bad, James. If you were really a bad man, you wouldn’t have pulled me up to the roof, you’d have let me fall.”

“Lara?”

“No, it’s me, James, it’s me, Miley.”

“Lara, why didn’t you wait for me?”

“I’m here James, I’m waiting for you to get better,” I cried.

“It’s me, Miley.”

James was heaving heavily, now on all-fours. “Help me, Lara.”

“With what?”

“Help me take off my shirt. Arggggg! I can’t stop it any more.”

“I’ll help you, James, but don’t die okay, don’t give up!”

I tugged on the bottom of his filthy and drenched T-shirt. I pulled it up and over his head as he pause between being clenched in pain.

I gasped as I saw the ugly red welts all over his back. They criss-crossed his back glowing an ugly shade of red. His whole back was writing with movement.

“What is it? What is wrong with your back? What happened to you, James?”

“They whipped me, Lara, it was part of the payment. It was what I had to do to get away… gaaaaa! And you didn’t even wait for me!”

“James, it’s me Miley. I’m waiting for you.” I sobbed.

There was something under his skin. His shoulder blades where lumpy like elbows pressing through his skin. With each spasm of pain, the lumps at his shoulder blades swelled as though they would burst through.

I reached out to touch them with shaky fingers. The lumps were hard and I realized this was what he was containing. This was what he was fighting. He was trying to stop whatever what happening on his back.

“James, please stop! You’re hurting yourself. Stop trying to stop it!”

“But it will mean I can’t stay with you, Lara. If they come back, I have to go away, I can’t stay.”

James was sobbing now, the strain of his internal battle had worn him out. He was a mere shell of the tough man who didn’t care about much of anything. He had broken into a thousand pieces and was now just as fragile as a butterfly.

“You can stay,” I promised. Arguing with him logically wasn’t going to work. Instead I pretended for a moment that I was the Lara he spoke of in his delirium.

“James, you can stay with me, no matter what. I’m waiting for you, James.”

“But not like this, they won’t let me stay like this!”

“They will, they have! You can stay with me, James. I promise, you can stay with me.”

“I can’t fight it any more, Lara!”

“It’s okay.” I cooed to him in soft tones. “Please stop fighting it, I can’t bear to see you in pain. It will be okay, you can stay. You can stay with me.”

James reached out blindly to me, he grabbed my hands in his clammy hands and buried his face in my knees. He wrapped his arms around my waist and with a final shudder, let go.

I thought for a moment he was going to die then and there resting on my knees with his hands linked behind my back. His body found a momentary calm. His breathe was deep and warm and I smoothed back his sweat soaked hair.

“I’m here, I’m waiting for you,” I whispered.

His grip tightened on my waist as a huge wave of pain clutched his body, making his back arch up and as it did the strange lumps on his shoulder blades surged up and outwards. The sound was sickening as his skin split and moved aside for what press outwards.

Blood oozed out of the split but was replaced by a fist sized lump on each shoulder blade.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the gory mess of his shoulders. James was calmer between each spasm. As each spasm shook him, the lumps grew larger and the blood pooled around my knees.

“Please don’t die,” I begged.

With another groan, James back arched again and again and the lumps grew and grew, they sprouted tiny white feathers. They were wet and gory at first but as his wings got larger, the wounds they had made seemed to cover over. As they grew, I heard bones snapping and creaking with the pressure of such rapid growth. James was growing a full set of wings that would extend down his back to his ankles. To the sides they extended farther than his reach.

“I’m sorry, Lara, I couldn’t stop it any more. I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” he sobbed into my knees.

The rain still fell as I sat there in the chill of evening in darkness. I could see the soft glow of James’ wings in the dimness of near total darkness. He was calmer now and breathing deeply. He was asleep on my knees and only the occasional shudder of pain told me the wings were still growing. I was exhausted too, I huddled the plaid jacket closer to myself. I sat with my head leaned back against the hay and one hand on James’ head. I stayed that way the whole night, listening to him snore softly. His arms were limp on the floor by my sides. I pulled his jacket up to try to keep him warmer where his scarred back was bare.

I was completely and totally emotionally and physically drained.

I dosed off a little and by morning found myself lying on the table cloth with James’ leather jacket over me.

James was stroking my face gently. He stopped as soon as he realized I was awake.

“Are you okay?” I ventured.

“Yeah, I’m okay,” he whispered

“Oh, thank God!” I breathed.

James frowned.

“Are you hungry, Miley?”

I nodded.

“Here.” He handed me a peanut butter and jam sandwich. “I found some stuff in the farm house.”

“Thanks,” I said gratefully. My stomach had clenched and cramped most of the night, granola bars and water no longer enough to quiet it.

I sat up and James watched me eat.

“Aren’t you hungry?”

“I already ate.”

I licked the peanut butter off my fingers a little while later. “So, what are you James?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” He asked, extending his wings out in a stretch.

“You’re an angel?”

He nodded, “I was an angel.”

What happened?”

“I fell, I fell… I fell for someone and they didn’t choose me.”

“Is that what the drugs were for? To stop this?”

James nodded again.

“And those marks, the marks on your back?”

“Ancient history.”

“You weren’t allowed to fall?”

“Angels aren’t supposed to fall.”

I reached for a second sandwich he held out for me.

“Who was Lara?”

“Don’t you know?”

I shook my head confused.

“Your mother.”

“Mom?”

“I guess you don’t usually call her by name.”

“You fell for my mom?”

“Yeah.”

“Is that why you saved me?”

“Because I was supposed to protect her and I chose not to, and…”

“And?”

“There is a very good chance that you are my daughter.”

The news shocked me.

“What if I’m not?”

James shrugged. “You look an awful lot like your mother, when I met her a century ago.”

“That’s it?”

“Yeah, you look like her okay… when I actually cared about something.”

James fell backwards in an arch like he was in immense pain, but this time it wasn’t from his back or wings.

“Can I do something?”

James opened his eyes a crack. “Nope, you’re alive, that’s enough for me.”

“If you met my mother a century ago… how is that possible?”

“You’re mother is only half human.”

“And so I’m…”

“Only three quarters human.”

“Yeah, one quarter what?”

“Encantando.”

“Encan… what?”

“Encantando, an immortal water being from Brazil. Don’t worry about it Miley, you’re mostly human.”

“Then if I’m mostly human, I’m not your daughter.”

“Look, I don’t really know, we were together only once in modern times, then she ran away and never looked back.”

“You really fell for her.”

“Yes.”

“Then you loved her a lot. She goes by Laura now.”

“Yes,” he choked out a little more roughly.

I slid my arms around his back and hugged him. “Thanks for not dying last night.”
He held his arms aloft like he didn’t know what to do with them, then slowly lowered them to return the hug.

Save Me - Chapter 4

Save Me – Chapter 4

The next morning, James was a pallid colour of grey, he was on the ground practically writhing.

“James!”

“Gaaa!”

“Oh, my God!”

“Argggg…”

“Is it the drugs? James, I don’t know what to do.”

“Drugs? Ha! He gave me nothing… ”

“Were they poisoned?”

I went over to him with a bottle of water, he’d spilt his.

James shook his head and shoved the bottle away.

“What could be worse than that?”

“I’m out, do you get it? I’m out, he gave me fakes.”

“Out of what James? Why won’t you tell me how I can help you!?”

“You can’t help me. Fuuuuuck!”

He curled into a fetal position and tried to control the spasms that were rattling his whole body.

“There’s no cure for this, he’s out there somewhere, having a good laugh. Argggg!”

“I don’t understand!” I yelled at him. “Help! Help, can someone come and help me?!”

James bolted upright and clamped a hand over my mouth.

“Are you stupid? Don’t draw attention to me. No one can help.”

He collapsed again, holding my arm with bruising strength as another wave of pain wracked his body.

“I n-need privacy. Help me get into that barn and then hide all evidence of our camp.”

I pried his hand off my arm and rubbed it.

“I can’t carry you, you’ll have to try and walk there.”

“Just help me,” he groaned.

“What if there is another earthquake?”

“Fuuuuck!” he cursed again before pushing himself up to his knees. He hung his head there panting. “Just get me to the barn, please!”

I put his arm over my shoulders and threw both arms around his torso. I used all my strength to help him to his feet and had to wait as he shuttered again.

The sun was shining hot in the east and it was cloudless. The day would only get hotter and the way James was already sweating, he clearly needed to get to the cooler barn. We took two steps and his full weight threatened to topple us again. I struggled to hold him up. We took two steps again and he arched his back in agony. We powered forward four steps before he fell to one knee again, absorbing the violence of whatever was rattling his body.

It took what I estimated to be a half hour before I finally got us to the barn doors, one was slightly open and it was enough to push us through. It was a storage barn, there were tractors and tools and one whole half was bales of hay. I pulled James’ weigh towards the closest bale.

I was exhausted and all I could manage was to sit for a few minutes and watch him as he spasmed and tossed. He was reaching back and clawing with his fingers at his back.

“I’ll be right back,” I promised. I tucked his jacket under his head. He didn’t hear me as I hurried out, closing the barn door behind me. I hurried over to the fire and kicked up dirt over the coals. I folded up the cloth I’d been using as a blanket.

“Having problems, little girl?”

I froze. I reached into my bag and pulled out the letter opener, keeping it behind my back as I turned to meet my visitor.

It was a filthy man with a heavy covering of stubble, he leered at me in a way that made my skin crawl as badly as when the demon had appraised me the night before.

“No, I am fine.” I said cautiously.

“It don’t sound like you’re fine. Is someone dying in there?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“Alls I’m saying is if you need someone to protect you, I’d be happy to travel with a young and beautiful young woman like yourself.”

He licked his lips like the demon had the night before.

You’re on your own, you’re on your own… echoed through my head. I stood there to face the man still wearing just a pair of filthy ballet flats and a leotard under a men’s dress shirt.

I could have ran, but running would mean that James would be alone and unprotected and so would I.

I faced the man with greater resolve. “Stay away from me.”

“Awww, kitten, I wouldn’t hurt you.” He cooed inching forward with a small shuffle.

I took a step backward and stumbled over my bag. I needed to drop my hands to the ground to steady myself. It seemed to be getting darker the longer we stood there facing each other. He was looking for an opening, an opportunity to do something horrible to me.

“I mean it!” I yelled at him, “Stay the fuck away from me!”

“Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.”

“Look, my friend is near by and he’ll kill you if you touch me.”

“I told you kitten, I won’t hurt you,” he said with a sneer. He took a step forward forcing me to back up another step. He pushed his greasy hair out of his eyes with the back of his wrist, then shook out his hands as though we was getting ready to use them.

“No!” I screamed lunging forward with my letter opener aimed toward his chest.

He laughed a wicked mechanical laugh and took another step forward, ignoring the brass point. He batted it away like a pesky fly.

I felt a surge of anger as I took yet another step backwards, I raised my weapon again and prepared to attack. Running away would mean I’d always be in fear, running and alone. No matter how terrible James was, he was a much better option than what stood in front of me.

I stood there. The resolve to stand and fight became a deep and rolling anger inside my stomach. A sudden sheen of fear filled his face as he look at me and looked behind me. A pound of lightening shook the earth as I stood my ground. The downpour drenched us in seconds. “Go, away now.” I said waving the dull metal letter opener in his direction.

I felt the wind blow my hair out around me and another clap of thunder hit the ground.

“M-my apologies, miss. I meant no disrespect!”

To my shock, the man turned and ran back in the direction he’d come from.

I stood there, tense and ready to attack. It continued to rain, but the thunder and lightening fell silent. I turned to look behind me. Perhaps there was something I should have been running from too, but all that was behind me was a huge black rolling cloud that was the storm.

I sighed with relief and tucked the letter opener into the shoulder strap of my leotard. I finished picking up the now thoroughly soaked bag and I continued to cover up where the fire had been and hurried back to the barn.

James was there, still writhing and bucking in agony. I could do nothing but sit there and watch helplessly. The rain pattered on the tin roof in a quiet rhythm. I found a plaid farm jacket hanging off of one of the tractors and I wrapped myself in it.

I was afraid to leave James alone, afraid to leave the barn at all in case the man returned. So, I waited and paced. I offered James sips of water which he took between bouts of pain.

I hoped it would be over soon, I prayed that it would be over soon and that he wouldn’t die and leave me alone here.

Save Me - Chapter 3

Save Me - Chapter 3

We had walked all day and we camped outside an old barn in case the earthquakes shook again. I lay with the fire at my back and covered in the table cloth with my head on the pack of supplies. My eyes snapped open as I listened to a strange voice from behind me.
“What the fuck, Jamessss? Thissss issssn’t the one.”
“The fuck it isn’t,” spat back James. “Do you really think it was easy to pull off what I pulled off?”
“She’s a teenage girl for fuckssss sssssake! I’m sure if she was sssssupposed to be a teenager, I’d fuckin’ know thosssse kind of detailsssss!”
“You were too fuckin’ lazy to do it yourself, and now it’s my fuckin’ fault?”
“Don’t you know any other words?” I demanded from my corner of the fire.
James growled, “Shut up, Miley!”
“No! You woke me up, now you have to deal with me.” I growled back sitting up, but as soon as I did, I wished I hadn’t.
The stranger laughed, “I sssssee you’ve been teaching her sssssome of your more charming mannersssss.”
The stranger was a deep shade of red and it wasn’t a sun burn. He had a short pointed horn on each temple and I could see a long tail casting a shadow in the fire light. Every tissue in my body screamed for me to run. This guy was bad news.
“Don’t move,” ordered James.
I clamped my hands to my thighs and stayed perfectly still.
“So, do you want her or don’t you?”
The stranger looked over at me, my skin crawled as he did because his forked tongue came out of his mouth and licked his lips.
“James, you can’t…”
“Shut up, Miley.”
My heart pounded as I waited for the verdict. Could I run fast enough to escape two grown men? Or, one grown man and what I could only describe as a demon.
“Have you grown fond of him, Miley?”
When I didn’t answer he came over and poked my shoulder with one slender black tipped finger. “I asssssked you a quesssstion.”
“Y-yes,” I stammered.
The creature burst into an almost hysterical laugh, his tail wagged back and forth like a deranged puppy. I could see from here that all his teeth were pointed and his whole body was lean and pure muscle.
“You didn’t fulfill your part of the deal, Jamesss. That means you sssstill owe me. I travelled all thissss way, that should count for sssssomething!”
“Yeah, well add it to my bill. It’s not my fault you don’t want her.”
“Sssssorry, sssssweetheart you’re sssstill sssstuck with Jamesssss. Tisssss’ a pity though, you look quite… tassssty.”
“Stuff it, Dev, did you bring me anything?”
“A little ssssomething, but only becausssse I conssssssider you a friend.”
James caught a baggie of something I couldn’t see in the firelight.
“Fuck, that won’t last more than a couple days!”
“Then you ssssshould have come through with the goodssss. You’re such a ssssorry excuse for a man, you could be so much more.”
“You can fuck off now, Dev.”
“Jusssst remember, you owe me now.”
“I don’t owe you a fuckin’ thing!”
“Sssssuit yourself, Jamesssss. But you’re on your own now.”
The red man vanished. He was there one moment and gone the next.
James turned away and grabbed his bottle of water. He popped a couple things into his mouth and sighed in relief after taking a swig of water.
When he opened his eyes, they were bloodshot again. I was shocked at how quickly they worked.
“Are you afraid?” he asked.
I nodded a yes.
“Good, you should be. Don’t ever talk to one of them if you ever encounter one like him again. Don’t look them in the eyes, they can be very persuasive.
“Is he, the Devil?” I whispered.
“Dev? Ha, ha! No. Dev is short for Devon, not Devil… but he is a demon, and demons are very dangerous, do you understand? Don’t talk to them.”
“There are others?”
“Yes. Did you understand my words?”
“Yes. What are the pills for James?”
“Never mind that, it’s none of your business. You were supposed to still be asleep. Go back to sleep.” He sank to the ground and warmed his hands over the flames. I watched as the licks of light reflected in his increasingly glassy eyes. I felt the rage building in my chest.
“But you tried to give me to that… demon! I won’t be able to sleep anymore. How can I trust you?” I exploded.
“I knew he’d never take you. What do they want with children?” He spit to one side and reached for a cigarette. “I was just playing along.”
James sat there like I wasn’t about to lop off his head with my bare hands! I sat there and the tears started to fall, yet again. I was shaking with rage and frustration, I wanted to jump on his back and pound all my frustration out on him, but it all crumbled into a wobbly mess of tears.
“Awww, shit, Miley!”
I tried to swallow some of my tears, but they just didn’t want to stop. “I’m s-sorry, I can’t help it.” I whimpered, “I don’t know what happened, I’m afraid of everything! I was afraid of the earthquakes then the flood, I’m afraid of you and I was afraid of what we would find when we walked after the whole day, and we found nothing. Nothing that will make me feel safe, nothing that would explain what happened, nothing that will tell me we won’t starve when all the water and granola bars are gone!”
“I’m afraid of everything, James, even you. Nothing makes sense and I feel like I’m going to go crazy. It’s only been a day and a half, but it feels like a year has passed since I was a normal girl taking a ballet class! I’m not getting any answers. All I’m getting are more questions.”
I paused to take a breath. I was heaving in sobs and trying to wipe my nose on a crumpled up tissue I found in a pocket. “Can’t I have at least one answer? Where did everyone go, did my parents survive?”
“It’s the apocalypse.”
“Apoca-what?” I sniffled.
“The end of the world, the apocalypse… whatever you want to call it, all it means is that there is no longer any difference between heaven, hell and here.”
“But, I don’t believe in hell.”
“It doesn’t matter what you believed. Faith had no part in what happened, this was foretold for generations. You’re such an innocent, Miley.” He sighed with a cloud of smoke.
“I don’t have to be! I’m sixteen, didn’t women used to be married with kids at this age once? I’m not a little girl and if I had my choice I wouldn’t be sitting here with a drug addict. ”
“We’re not living in the Renaissance, Miley. In this day and age, you’re just a little girl. And my addictions are none of your business.”
“You’re gonna’ run out eventually.”
“Yeah,” he agreed with a frown. “Go back to sleep.”
I tried to.
“James?”
“Yeah?”
“If he was a demon, does that mean there are angels too?”
“There’s a lot of things out there that most mortal humans didn’t know about. Faeries, ogres, elves, dragons…”
